Gone are the days when we go to a restaurant or hotel only for the food. We now look out for a good cozy place to eat, socialize and to have a good time. The restaurant experience had transformed, from food to an experience, giving you or I should say, induce a certain emotion or mood. That’s the reason, a well designed place is buzzing with people in recent times and Chennai is seeing the potential for themed restaurants right now. Although designing a restaurant and aiming for a certain theme has picked up long ago, I strongly feel that people appreciate and go there often only in recent times.

I recently had the opportunity to visit Mid-Street for a design review. Let me give you a little brief of Mid-street, It is a restaurant that offers ice creams and short eats like sandwich, milkshakes and softies. It is situated bang on the main road or I should say, on the main street, hence the name Mid-street. The exteriors of this restaurant blends beautifully with the main road chaos, to an extent, If there’s no stairs for the restaurant’s entrance, a biker or a cyclist would go straight into it thinking its an small alley. It does justice to the Mid-street name and the overall theme of the restaurant.
The restaurant is situated among various schools, so obviously the main target customers are the school kids, the small kids who come with their parents and the teenage guys who loves to hangout with their friends and have something to eat/drink. But this is where Mid-street separates itself from other restaurants by pricing their foodies very nominally, keeping in mind, who is their target customer’s are.
Mr. Kaushik, one of the managing partner told “These days, a typical teenage kid gets anywhere from 50-150 as pocket money and we had to price our food according to that, since they are our prime customers. In weekends, we experience a jam packed crowd here”
Once you enter the restaurant, its a different world altogether. The whole theme of the Interior design has been done with keeping the school kids in mind. Its evident in every corner you see and Its a sheer delight. There are two french window like setup, both right and left, which gives you that vintage french feel with a nice glow of the daylight, yet separating you from the outside chaos.
The wall graffiti like designs are so intriguing and interesting that I ended up looking them for quite a long time, totally forgot to take photographs. The eye for small details was very evident and it all said only one story – Mid street. All the stories/illustrations/graffiti connect in one way or another to Mid-street, see this for example,
“I’ve a life outside of MID STREET, it involves parking my car @ entrance” , How cool is that? Infact there are number of these cheeky and cute one liners with great illustrations that resembles no more than a last page scribblings of a rough note, It captivates and keeps the kids engaging, a sure shot concept indeed.
The one set of chairs has the carvings of Mid-street alphabetically and its colorful.
The restaurant’s seating arrangements are fairly simple, neatly gravitated towards the left and right walls, leaving a center space for traffic. Although it is the best possible way of seating arrangements for a relatively small restaurant, since the chairs and tables are tucked all the way to the wall, there are chances of damaging the wall art by chair dragging or forming drag marks.
You can notice that along with the kids friendly interior design concept, there is also a theme of road/street running along. Mr. kaushik told that he also runs a CEAT tyre franchise business. So he wanted to incorporate that into this design as well. The wall illustrations + the road theme gels beautifully with the name Mid-street.
In my school days I’d get 1 rupee as my pocket money, but mind you, you can buy 4 guava’s for that. But today, kids easily get 50-200, go to a cool place, hangout with friends and have a good time. When I was photographing this place, a cool bunch of teenage kids came, ordered food and they were having a good time. Mid-street has tailored everything from Interiors to food aiming for this one thing – A cool hangout spot for kids.
This concept of wall art was done by Kanaa, a dream company and the whole interiors was designed and executed by Sahanas
I preserved this shot for the end
